We love going downtown to the Market Square Farmers Market as a family every Saturday. It is such a great atmosphere. We joined a CSA this summer, which stands for a Community Supported Agriculture. What that basically means is that we have decided to support a local farm and in return we get the fresh, seasonal produce each week from May through October that they have harvested from their family farm. This has been such a blessing so far. It is so refreshing to know the people by name that you are getting your food from and get to know them as a family. They have invited us out to their farm in June, and the girls can not wait to help gather the chicken eggs and help in the garden. Every week we take our little basket and the girls wait for "Mr. Adam" to give us our food. We are really seeing first-hand how involving them in the whole food process makes them much more eager to try new things. They are beginning to appreciate where food comes from and why God made certain foods for us each season. Can you believe they were eating cooked turnip and mustard greens last week without any help from us? Very exciting! Our whole family is being challenged to try new things, not just the girls. This usually means that each week when we look into our basket I have to go searching for a recipe online to learn how to cook a vegetable we have never tried. But even more exciting than introducing them to healthy foods, is teaching them about how we want to support people who are really caring for the land and raising food and animals the way that God intended for us to.
The people from Cruze Dairy Farm already know our family by name and always have a sample of their delicious chocolate milk waiting on us when we walk up. We are really enjoying our fresh milk each week. Now that we have all tasted the good stuff there is no going back!
